He discovers he's a police inspector almost right away, but subtle clues-- the fact that no one has visited him in his convalescence, or seems particularly excited he's returned to work-- allow him to piece together a picture of his former life that is rather unpleasant. The Face of a Stranger is the first book I read in this series, and I enjoyed reading this book.

William Monk looks in the mirror, and doesn't know the man looking back.

The main characters has substance had substance Monk is wrestling with himself after a serious road accident and brings his own integrity. They become unwilling allies in the case which Monk investigates in this first book, and their subsequent adventures continue to be on a less than amiable footing for some time through the series. The historical details regarding everything from the hospitals of that day, to the low status of Scotland Yard, to the precarious nature of life for those who have to struggle to support themselves, and the vast difference of the lives of the well-to-do, are fascinating and presented in a way that often causes the reader to recognize the injustice of such matters. After this first Monk book, I continued to read both the Pitt books and the Monk books, but I always looked forward the most to the Monk books. This framework sets a fun backdrop to a highly sensational murder case involving a war hero and nobleman who was brutally murdered in his London flat. It's my first day on the job and bodies are dropping dead around me.

Terrence Hardiman, By: This is quite an interesting way to begin a Victorian police mystery with foggy London and country house visits as typical requisites as the man in question tries to solve the puzzle of his identity and an involved crime.

The main character's amnesia is thoughtfully dealt with and contributes significantly to the development.

At the beginning of this book we meet the MC in a hospital suffering from amnesia. The atmosphere of the novel, the other characters and settings were authentic enough but the balance of the story wavered between believable and unbelievable because of this central figure.
